A pet in the middle of a busy road is a scary sight.but a blind pet in the middle of a busy road is even scarier. But that's what Friendicoes came across recently when a blind St. Bernard was reported wandering on a busy road in the city. When the Friendicoes team reached the spot the dog was wandering aimlessly on the road trying to find his way, unaware of the danger of speeding traffic around him.
His size made the team a bit nervous in approaching him but when they tried to get his attention he wagged his tail and looked at them as though he could see them clearly. This gentle giant was later named Valentine for his saintly temperament and royal bearing. He is a huge dog with the mildest temperament and the most endearing personality. His lack of sight did not seem to bother him much as he went through life with a happy and content air about him. Although he attracted people like bees to honey, none of them were big hearted enough to take him with his lack of sight. The only questions asked were "will he ever regain his sight?" "Can anything be done about his eyes?" "How old is he? Can a surgery help?" Unfortunately Valentine suffered from cornea ulcer that had taken away his sight completely and chances of recovery are near to nil.
After about 20 days Valentine succumbed to kennel cough, the bane of every shelter, and he needed extra care and attention. In the absence of any prospective adoption he was taken home by a volunteer for fostering. In a few days he recovered and in true Valentine style won the hearts of everyone in his foster family. Just when it started looking like he was not going anywhere Mausumi Kar called Friendicoes. She and her husband had heard about Valentine from a friend and were keen in adopting him. They already had a St. Bernard named Chenghiz and they were eager that Valentine should join their family at the earliest. So house checks followed and adoption protocol completed and Valentine went to his new family. When Friendicoes team went to meet him at his new home after a fortnight Valentine had made himself an integral part of their small family. His proud parents Mausumi and Bappaditya just could not talk enough about their two sons, Valentine and Chenghiz. A more deserving dog we have not met and we wish the happy family lots of blessings and joy.
