Animals cannot help themselves – they must depend on people who care to fight for them. Since 1979 FRIENDICOES SECA (Society for the Eradication of Cruelty to Animals) a registered non profit charity (Registration no 10188) has been dedicated to providing a voice for all the animals who have been victims of neglect and cruelty.
In 2008 25,000 such abused, injured and abandoned animals found refuge at our shelter or were treated and released and each year this number increases. In a day FRIENDICOES receives over 50 distress calls which brings in dogs with maggot wounds, spinal chord injuries and fractured legs, cats that have been attacked and injured by dogs or run over by cars. Puppies and kittens are left on our doorstep in boxes and sacks, old and disabled pets are tied outside our shelter or abandoned in the nearby parks for our volunteers and staff to pick them up. Monkeys which are electrocuted or beaten up are brought to us. Friendicoes has handraised over 12 monkey babies whose mothers have fallen prey to human cruelty or dog attacks or met an accident and died, leaving the poor babies to fend for themselves. We have also rescued more than 120 injured and abused monkeys, which are then handed over to our sister organisation Wildlife S.O.S. for permanent shelter.
Pedigreed dogs abandoned in their old age is a very common sight at the FRIENDICOES shelter. Once the animal gets prone to old age ailments or shows aggressive behaviour the owner thinks its valid for him to dump it at the shelter as the animal has become more of a liability. Rabbits and Hamsters, are the latest in the pet trade and are abandoned with us the moment the first thrill of a novel pet lessens. Donkeys and ponies, old and wounded are left along the highway and brought to Friendicoes when a concerned citizen alerts us. At any given time Friendicoes City Shelter has in its care over 200 animals at the City Shelter alone. We provide efficient veterinary care, give them food and love, till they can be re-homed, or sent to live out their lives at our country shelter, while those in great pain, suffering infectious and chronic diseases are mercifully euthanized.
A donation of 150$ provides a meal to all the animals at the shelter and the sanctuary. To donate Click Here
